Hg2 : The Hedonist

Head to Woodstock for an unrivaled variety of shops in Cape Town’s oldest suburbs. The Old Biscuit Mill (373-375 Albert Road) Site of the weekly Neighbourgoods Market (Saturdays; see Snack), it’s worth your while to pop in here during the week to check out the small retail section adjacent. If you haven’t seen them at Cape Quarter, don’t miss Imiso Ceramics and Heartworks. Plush Bazaar always has an interesting collection of found objects for the home, Decadence Couture make the most beautiful one-off lampshades you have ever seen, and Bead Boyz has a great selection of beads to custom-make your own jewellery. Whatever you do, don’t miss; The Mobile Boutique – a collection of the coolest South African designers (look out for Amanda Laird Cherry), a step above the now rather commercial and tacky YDE (see Waterfront). Whatiftheworld Gallery (208 Albert Road) There are a lot of top-end galleries in Woodstock now, but this gallery got here first. It leads the way in terms of curation too – young and edgy, Whatiftheworld has kick-started the careers of several rising stars.rnThe Bromwell (250 Albert Rd) A ‘shopping concept’ store, with not a single shopping assistant, just computers into which you press the number of whatever you’re investigating. And you are likely to be investigating a lot – not unlike an overstuffed museum, just about every piece here is fascinating and probably overpriced. I guess that’s the price you pay for truly ‘unique’. Rewardrobe (89 Sir Lowry Road) Refashioned and recycled second-hand garments and accessories, Rewardrobe specialises in giving old items new life. Every Sat there’s a sale of stock that’s been on the rails for more than a month.rnVamp Cnr (Albert Road and Treaty St) Vintage furniture, décor and homeware products sensitively restored and revamped, often in bold and unusual colours.
