Hg2 : The Hedonist

Cape Point Vineyards

Rather unsurprisingly, wine tasting is one of the most popular things to do in Cape Town. An unexpected surprise at the ‘other’ end of Chapman’s Peak, just outside Noordhoek, close to the seemingly endless white dunes of Long Beach (see Play), and a useful stop en route to Cape Point itself. Wines tasted here come from grapes grown on a postage stamp-size estate that is the only member of the Cape Point wine district; apparently, the elevation and the sea breezes from the Atlantic on both sides create a distinctive environment, including three varieties of soil substrate that, ultimately, contribute to the award-winning wines produced by surfer-cum-winemaker, Duncan Savage. Tastings don’t happen on the estate itself, but in a renovated mine building on top of a filled-in kaolin mine; the whites are consistently rated amongst the best in the country, and you’d better not miss Duncan’s sublime Sauvignon Blanc/ Semillon blend, Isliedh.
