True hedonists must have at least three or four wine estates on their list of things to do in Cape Town. So if you still have to tick a couple of boxes, head to this immaculate, modern estate (one of several in the Graham Beck portfolio) on the outskirts of Franschhoek, just down the drag from L’Ormarins, featuring magnificent landscaping, slick modern architecture, and a tasting room with a dramatic view into the gleaming bottling plant through the massive glass wall. Graham Beck’s wines are fine-drinking, and the list of awards garnered is immense. With grapes from four different wine farms, each with its unique terroir qualities and climate conditions, the winemaker has the benefit of considerable range when it comes to producing distinctive notes and character in the wines. It’s the Graham Beck Brut sparkling wine which is widely considered amongst the nation’s top 10 exports, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t several surprises to be found amongst the long list of non-bubbly vintages produced here: the Old Road Pinotage is making considerable waves.
