Come enjoy Shakespeare’s masterpieces in one of the most popular theatres in Cape Town. A perennial favourite on the summer entertainment calendar, Maynardville Park first hosted a performance of The Taming of the Shrew in the mid-1950s; since then, the outdoor ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ has become an annual fixture, and draws large crowds (averaging around 20,000 each year) to witness an annual reinvention of one of the Bard’s plays, often treated with a uniquely South African timbre. Each year a different local director is charged with breathing new life into an old favourite, and the cast typically includes a range of performers, from top-drawer stars to emerging student actors.
