White Shark Projects
Not many Cape Town diving courses get you this close to the sharks. So if you’re brave enough to swim alongside one of the largest predators on the planet, go ahead and book a session with White Shark Projects. Like many of the operators, this company conducts morning and afternoon dive sessions, with Cape Town hotel pick-ups starting very early in the morning in order to get to Kleinbaai, known as the Great White Shark Capital of the World, two-hours from the city. Nowhere else on the planet can you get to the sharks with so little effort and with such favourable odds of actually seeing them. In winter, you’ll head out to a spot near Geyser Rock – the preferred winter breeding ground for 60,000 Cape fur seals, who in turn provide an endless supply of meals for the sharks. You’re supplied with everything you need for the dive, but take warm clothing along (the water is icy and the onboard breeze will chill you to the core); unless you’re regularly at sea, consider taking sea-sick medication (ask you doctor). You can also purchase underwater cameras, or purchase the boat’s crew excellent video of the entire outing (R300 per DVD).
