Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s oil rich capital, is Dubai’s well-behaved older brother, who looks fondly at his wild child sibling but wouldn’t dream of behaving like him. Abu Dhabi has an elegant Corniche ringed with fine hotels, the best being Emirates Palace, a dazzling if somewhat daunting five-star beach resort, rumoured to be the most expensive hotel ever built. The new Shangri-La resort has a lavish spa well worth making a detour for. In town, there is an impressive Cultural Foundation with various exhibitions, a working dhow harbour where you can see these traditional craft being made, and Heritage Village, a reproduction of a Bedouin camp complete with craftsmen, camels and falconry. Saadiyat Island is being developed into a fabulous leisure destination, with museums like the Guggenheim and the Louvre adding serious culture clout.
