The super trendy House Café has a dozen branches dotted around town, including locales in Ortaköy, Tünel and Nisantasi. The latter is a lovely domed corner café with its own back garden; the Ortaköy branch is a good stop if you’re trawling along the Bosphorus near the clubs of Kuruçesme. All boast large wooden tables, minimalistic cool décor and a loyal following among Istanbul’s fashionable crowd. All the girls look immaculate and sport identical haircuts and accessories, which must make it confusing for the tanned, affluent-looking open-shirted men who hang around trying to get them drunk (best to go to Ortaköy if you want to take part in this kind of thing). Everything’s moderately expensive by Istanbul standards. The cocktails are good, as is the food, which is standard cool café fare – pizzas, pastas and salads. The burger is something of a speciality and is comes highly recommended. At evenings and weekends in the summer the House Café in Ortaköy gets especially packed so be sure to book ahead if you plan to dine here.
