Hg2 : The Hedonist

Markiz Café

A survivor from the Pera neighbourhood’s glamorous heyday, the Markiz was saved from dereliction and spruced up by the owners of the Richmond Hotel across the street. Despite the probable press of tourists you’ll encounter, it’s worth a visit to sit and enjoy the tiled Art Noveau wall designs of French artist J.A. Arnoux, which depict spring and autumn (the other two seasons were lost somewhere along the way). During the early 20th-century, members of Istanbul’s intelligentsia and artistic community frequented the Markiz. They were attracted to the café primarily for its renowned pastries (baked in the special pastry oven the Markiz’s original owners shipped over from Paris) and by each other’s sophisticated company. The pastries are still good, as are the coffees. Sadly, atmosphere is rather harder to restore.
