Anjelique

Mirrors are the leitmotif at Anjelique, ostensibly so that the club’s terrific Bosphorus views are reflected and bounced around the place, but I think we all know it’s so that neurotic Turkish TV stars going out in Istanbul can keep themselves calm throughout the evening with quick, unsubtle checks of their mascara or gelled-back hair (no gender prejudice here).

Owned by the Doors Group who seem to be on a mission to stylize the social life of Istanbul’s wealthy, party crowd, and own Wanna, Vogue (see Eat) and A’jia (Sleep), Anjelique is ultra-cool in its feel, the aforementioned mirrors set against white walls and touches of purple light.

The restaurant on the terrace is typically full, but the bar and dance-floors are where the action is, and get going after midnight. Grooving alongside the slender models and beefy tanned male accompaniment are plenty of Istanbul’s super-rich. On which note, if you’re a guy and on the pull and you are not a) a Turkish celebrity, b) an A-list international celebrity (having been on an embarrassing reality TV show once doesn’t count), c) playboy heir to a billion-dollar soap/ball-bearing/hemp manufacturing empire or d) combination of the above (extra points), then lie and pretend you are.

If you are a lady with amorous intent then be warned that the kind of men you find at Anjelique are exclusively interested in those traditional feminine qualities of honesty, chastity. scratch that, I’m getting my venues mixed up, that was the guys from the Ali Pasha Mosque. interested in, er, tans and a creatively minimal approach to clothing. This applies equally to Reina, Sapphire and Sortie.
