Marmara Pera

Occupying a renovated 1970s tower block slap-bang in the centre of old Pera, views from the Marmara Pera take in three or four million lesser mortals at a glance. Inside post-minimalist interior design has something of the Ian Schrager about it, with the odd ornate touch, such as a crystal chandelier or 1970s-style coloured leather chair, offsetting a predominantly dark colour scheme and spacious environment. The hotel’s size – at 200 rooms – is just small enough to ensure you don’t get a sense of being anonymously swamped, which is common in Istanbul’s larger luxury hotels. But two big bonuses high above the skyline mark the Marmara Pera out from the crowd: the first is the astonishing rooftop pool with its wooden surround, reserved exclusively for hotel guests; the second is the super-cool Mikla winebar and restaurant on the floor below, which serves up excellent fusion cuisine, priceless panoramas and pricey drinks to match.
