The Grillhouse is one of South Africa’s longest surviving steakhouses, and boy does it show. Offering its discerning diners mouthwatering meals within cool club-esque interiors, you’d never guess that it was slap-bang in the middle of a busy shopping centre – had you not walked through to get to it, that is. Fabulous steaks and ribs go hand-in-hand with fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes, while the excellent wines and malts are brought up from the well-stocked wine cellar to quench the thirst of parched patrons. The décor itself is sophisticated and stylish (and kind of New York), surprising indeed for such a traditional steakhouse, with leather booths, dark wood, low-lighting and exposed brickwork. Those who don’t want to join the carnivores in the dining room can prop up the handcrafted bar or party in the private dining room, which has enough space to swing 70 guests. When you’ve finished at The Grillhouse, mooch over to Katzy’s next door and take in a spot of live jazz.
