Together with Bicaense and hairdressers WIP, this small café-bar has forged an increasingly cool community at the top of the Elevador da Bica.
It was once a traditional football tasca; ‘baliza’ is Portuguese for ‘goal’. By day, students and contemplative types bury themselves in thought or a good novel. The sounds of a percolator hissing and the funicular trundling up and down the hill are as reassuring as clockwork.
After dark, the serene atmosphere picks up as unpretentious creatives flit between here and Bicaense. Changing works of art keep the décor fresh and the mood is consistently inspirational. Friendly staff and tasty tostas put Baliza in a league of its own.
