The bric-à-brac opulence that characterises this conspiratorial drinking club is the unmistakable hand of Luis Pinto Coelho. A predecessor to Paródia, it is now owned by his ex-wife Alice. Guests who ring the doorbell are greeted by a friendly cocktail waiter in an ill-fitting dinner suit. It’s a surreal experience and a scene even David Lynch could not have imagined.
The open-plan bar is larger and brighter than Paródia, but enjoys similar decoration: fringed lampshades cast shards of light onto the exotic wood and plush velvet furnishings. This was once a bubble of frenetic political activity. The energy has since seeped away and the bar itself is as much a collector’s piece as the curios housed within. Located in a quiet courtyard near the Jardim das Amoreiras, Procópio is easy to miss. Find it just off the Rua João Penha.
