One of Lisbon’s contemporary hotels, the Altis Belem Hotel & Spa is a bold modernist structure daringly symbolising the recent makeover of Lisbon’s dock district (known as Docas). Sleek granite minimalism and a parade of strict right angles throughout the interior give the hotel an extremely contemporary feel, while subtly harking back to the area’s industrial heritage.

All rooms give yacht-bobbing port views and are resolutely decorated in austere satin tones, which certainly won’t suit those looking for cuddly charm in their abodes. The all-glass exterior extends to the bathrooms, which are set in an internal ‘fish bowl’ which ensure the fantastic estuary views are not to missed from any part of the room – a nice touch, which elevates the rooms above your standard design experience.

The spa is one of the best equipped in town with a handsome indoor pool and all the expected trimmings – ayurvedic, shiatsu and reiki treatments all being on the menu.
