The Albatroz Seaside Hotel
Jutting out over the Atlantic, and just a short 30 minute train ride outside of Lisbon, The Albatroz Seaside Hotel is the pick of Cascais hotels with its fairytale appearance. 44 individually designed rooms are spread over two genuinely regal buildings – the former royal residence of the Duke of Loulé – and vary from regal opulence to beach-house casual. It’s worth noting that prices drop considerably for the few street-facing rooms, which defeat the purpose of the hotel and are to be categorically ignored.
Be sure to insist on an ocean-facing room, where the swirling serenade of the Atlantic and all-blue views of the sea and sky provide the perfectly sublime seaside experience. The nicest suite has a Brazilian-wood library-style living room and stone pillar balcony, with, of course, the mandatory floor-to-ceiling azure Atlantic view. Non-guests might note that the newly renovated, open-to-all, cliff-top bar is the swankiest waterfront spot for sangria sundowners (the tacky connotation is lost on the sangria-loving Portuguese).
