Hg2 : The Hedonist

Bonjardim

Bonjardim is a cheap-and-cheery local fave amongst the Lisbon restaurants as like most of Old Europe’s metropolises, the restaurant scene in Lisbon’s immediate city-centre is a hive of over-priced tourist traps. One of Lisbon’s restaurants serving overflowing platters of steak and grilled seafood ferried around by chubby and cheery moustachioed waiters but it’s the charred and plump piri piri-spiced barbecued chickens that most come for.

The finger-licking and delicious national dish is simply served whole or halved, with crispy, chilli-coved skin, chips and a fresh salad of tomato, onion and lettuce that’s all dolloped with olive oil. To truly get the local experience, blend in by eating like a local. This involves turning your chair to face the telly (that’s either playing football or a Brazilian soap), ripping legs and bones apart with your hands and stuffing your face with chips and beer, between mouthfuls of meat, and loudly scoffing at the telly as the onscreen excitement unfolds. Joyously barbaric.
