Can The Can
Can The Can is one of the more unique restaurants in Lisbon, having taken an innovative, and bordering on strange, approach to cuisine. Can The Can’s tagline ‘Canned Food Goes Gourmet’ sums it up in a nutshell. The menu is comprised of dishes containing both fresh and canned food. Although this may at first sound not particularly promising, Can The Can promises to change your mind about tinned foods. The menu has plenty of traditionally Portuguese dishes, with hints of other Mediterranean dishes, all of which are gourmet standard. The décor runs with the restaurant theme featuring a huge chandelier made out of small cans.
As a café/restaurant Can The Can provide a breakfast menu that offers variation of scrambled eggs, sandwiches and croissants, or for something lighter there are a choice of fruit dishes. However, this Lisbon restaurant’s main attraction is really the main menu. Starters like roasted cod with sautéed greens or spinach with garlic and fried quail’s egg are undoubtedly gourmet, although a little on the pricey side at around €10 (the same price as some of the mains). The mains menu varies in price (€18 for salted cod on cornbread with greens is definitely pricey considering how easily available cod is in Portugal), while the Can The Can special steak seems better value. The rest of the menu consists of hamburgers and pastas, which are priced around the €10 mark, but are no less inventive.
