Hg2 : The Hedonist

Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto is popular with the alternative fashion set and some of Lisbon’s most exciting young designers have set up shop in one of Lisbon’s coolest shopping areas. Many, however, have equally alternative opening hours. During the day, ‘volta ja’ (‘back soon’) signs are a common sight in shop windows: the area generally comes to life after 5pm. Shopping is a social experience and stores often stay open well into the night. Distinctions of function are also blurred, with shops doubling up as cafés, bars and downsized-clubs.
