New Cross Inn
This isn’t one of those normal pubs in London, the New Cross Inn is A Happening, whipped up by the art students of nearby Goldsmiths and the melody-makers behind Angular Recording Corporation (namely the Klaxons, The Long Blondes and These New Puritans). This shabby, shambolic ‘music’ pub is a playground ‘for the dreaming, the drowning and the drunk’, as is aptly scrawled on its wall, and the goal is clearly to leave in all three states. With live art-punk bands, poets, DJs, pool and pinball, plus late, late lock-ins (for ‘friends and family’ – get making friends), it’s easy enough to be creative with the bender here (try crowdsurfing for starters) and can be more like a wild house party than a pub. So infectious is its vibe that The Lock Tavern folk recently opened up the seriously sceney (if less authentic) Amersham Arms nearby (388 New Cross Road; 020 8469 1499), while the New Cross Inn has spawned a little sister in Deptford: Deptford Arms (52 Deptford High Street SE8; 020 8692 1180) – it’s another new Happening.
