Original Sin
Head below ground while you’re in Stoke Newington and you just might find some of the capital’s best drinks. From Ali Burgess, the man behind Happiness Forgets, one of Hoxton’s best bars, Original Sin is slim, moody, and booze-soaked. Much like a top supermodel. Unlike a top supermodel, however, high prices aren’t the order of the day here. They’re actually pretty reasonable. Especially considering the skill that goes into the creation of the drinks here. And the chic surrounds you enjoy them in.
While you can find many of the usual suspects on the menu at Original Sin – rum, gin, vodka – there are unusual offerings as well. To whit, the blueberry-infused scotch used in the Astral Fizz (mixed with 30&40 apple aperitif, lemon, sugar, egg white, and soda) or the peppercorn tequila and cider brandy found in the Iron Butterfly (alongside Mezcal, apple juice, lime, honey, and Gamma Ray pale ale). There are orange and lavender bitters and quince liqueur mixed in the Elixir cocktail with Reposado tequila, yellow chartreuse, lemon, and agave. And Kamm and Sons – a British botanical aperitif distilled with ginseng, fresh grapefruit peels and manuka honey – can be found in Three in the Evening, a potent concoction also starring rye, cane syrup, thyme, Angostura bitters and cider.
Ordinary drinks these are not. To ensure you can keep you wits about you (and continue to appreciate just how good these drinks are) as you imbibe, there’s a bijou menu of bar snacks to nibble on, like Nocellara olives and smoked almonds. And small plates of duck liver and cointreau pate or pork rillettes, which are served with crackers, chutney, cornichons and silverskin onions. Once you’re settled in at Original Sin, you seriously won’t want to leave.
