1A former multi-storey carpark might not be your first choice for a cocktail and an evening game of pétanque or croquet, but Skylight’s rooftop above east London’s Tobacco Dock, with its views of the sun setting behind the capital’s iconic skyline, is simply perfect. The twinkle of fairy lights helps you find your way to the top of this (dare we say it) hipster enclave, where cheery picnic tables and sophisticated lounge areas (depending on your mood) await.
The peckish can hunt down Yiro and Flip Side on Skylight’s second level, both with a distinctly pop-up, gourmet food festival vibe. For vegetarians, there are halloumi fries as chunky as gold ingots and crisp cauliflower wraps, but Skylight’s succulent buttermilk chicken burgers and juicy souvlaki gyro wraps, smothered in fresh tzatziki and chilli sauce, are the real crowd-pleasers.
The main event is the open-air top deck. With a panoramic vista of the cityscape and a buzzing bar, this is where the cool crowd plays. Order an Orange Expresso Martini for a zesty take on the classic, while a sweet Ginger Paloma or convivial Skylight Sangrita pair perfectly with the dazzling view. Quaffable wines include a Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc and a Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva Merlot.
Open Thursday to Sunday year-round, tuck into hot bratwurst, ciders and pumpkin-themed snacks in autumn, or molten fondue and ice hockey in the winter. Summers at Skylight are strictly reserved for balmy nights and frivolous lawn games beneath the stars.
