St Pancras Champagne Bar

What better excuse for fizz than waiting for your train? None of London’s champagne bars can match St Pancras’ on its opening hours, its magnificent backdrop of soaring glass-and-iron arches, and the glamour of seeing sleek, high-speed trains slink away to Paris while sipping on a glass of perfectly chilled bubbly. It also claims (misleadingly) to be Europe’s longest champagne bar, at 96m, though the actual serving bar is a central glass cube, while the long bit, running parallel to the Eurostar track, seats 110 (plus ample standing room) at polished wood banquettes offering sweeping views of the terminal. The bar, overseen by knowledgeable champagne sommeliers, boasts over 70 bins, ranging from affordable glasses (some 20 different types are available) to vintage Krug bottles stashed in a nearby safe, while a sophisticated all-day menu includes champagne breakfasts (for example, salmon and eggs), afternoon tea with a glass of Pommery, and – of course – oysters and caviar. Given that it’s trackside, the ambient temperature is ‘seasonal’ – ie, bitter in winter. To compensate, there are heated leather seats, adjustable fan heaters, blankets on demand and the good old-fashioned romance of champagnes and trains. Toot toot!
