The Dove
Broadway Market, nestled in between London Fields and Hackney’s canals, is the current address of choice for East End hipsters, and The Dove, one of the few pubs in London serving yum Belgian beers, is their New Best Friend. Here, the liquid equivalent of the latest haircut is The Dove’s wonderful cherry beer, but for those with beer fear there’s also a decent wine list. The menu features hearty Flemish dishes while its Sunday roasts have acquired legendary status – book ahead or expect a wait for a table. There’s a bohemian mittel-European feel to the décor (candle-strewn checkered tablecloths and a jumble of dark wooden chairs and benches), but in layout, The Dove is classic English – all higgledy-piggledy with various alcoves for lounging in comfort. There’s a roaring fire in winter and coveted spots in the garden when the sun is out. Its sister pub, The Dovetail in Clerkenwell (9-10 Jerusalem Passage; 020 7490 7321) is equally charming, though maybe after working through its selection of over 101 Belgian beers, anything would be.
