Hg2 : The Hedonist

The Salisbury

If pubs in London had sexes, The Salisbury would most certainly be a lady. This ornate institution proudly announces on the saloon doors that it’s been officially sports-free since 1892 – you wouldn’t be tempted to throw a ball around after appreciating the 50 or so hand-etched windows and delicate mirrors adorning every sparkling nook and cranny. Amber and rose lighting stokes up a warm, convivial atmosphere – romantic even, once settled into the gilt-framed velour booths with a pint of exquisitely silky cask ale in your hands. The Salisbury is one of only two London pubs to receive the Beautiful Beer Campaign’s Platinum Award (congratulations, too, to The White Horse): ie, excellent beer served with passion, knowledge and food recommendations – pub classics include pies, Ploughmans and roasts. It’s one of London’s best-preserved Victorian pubs, except, needless to say, this lady doesn’t care for darts.
