Hg2 : The Hedonist

Rasa

The original and best branch of what’s now a widespread group of London restaurants, this small hot-pink-painted, incense burning, Stoke Newington South Indian has, unlike some of the other Rasas (including the excellent Rasa Travancore opposite), that have branched out into meat and seafood, stuck to its authentic, all- vegetarian Kerala-Hindu-inspired menu. Owner Das Sreedharan, who grew up in Cochin and moved to London to study accountancy, only to open this, his first restaurant, in 1994, has dedicated a cookbook to his loyal Stokey locals. One of whom is Morgan Meunier, chef proprietor of Morgan M in Islington, who likes to take his family there for an affordable meal that can start with masala vadai (deep-fried lentil patties) and move on to nair dosas (pancakes filled with potatoes, beetroot and carrots) and cheera curry before finishing with pal payasam – rice pudding with cashews and raisins.
