Rochelle Canteen

London’s art and fashion scene is a behind-closed-doors affair. Press the ‘Canteen’ buzzer just by the ‘Boys’ entrance to the former Victorian Rochelle School, however, and gain instant access. Initially a staff canteen to service the ex-school’s working studios where London’s style mafia – Giles, Katie Hilier, Luella – have variously worked (hence a weekday-only service), everyone is now welcome in the whitewashed ex-bike shed to feast on the nose-to-tail offerings from onsite caterers Arnold & Henderson. Yes, that’s Henderson as in Margot Henderson, wife of Fergus of St John (see Eat), so there’s a nostalgic, northern English influence on the daily-changing menu (posted online). Breakfast is so basic (and quiet), it just goes on the blackboard: maybe eggs on toast, porridge, granola. Lunch is much busier (read: scenier), with perfectly executed dishes such as oxtail stew, Lancashire hotpot and posset for pud, all at very reasonable prices (how else to lure the artists?). In summer, the communal tables are deployed onto the tranquil, grassed-over playground; for dinner, you can hire it all, as have their prestigious clients, Acne, Adidas, Aesop…etc. There’s no licence, so bring your own and share it around to infiltrate one of London’s coolest cliques.
