Hg2 : The Hedonist

Cargo

Housed under three cavernous arches of a disused Victorian viaduct, this London live music club is a lair for the Hoxton homie – he/she of concept haircut and Rough Trade vinyl obsession. As a one-stop shop, Cargo provides all they require – in arch one, the Street Food Cafe serves up global flavours in manageably small clubbers’ portions, arch two is for lounging on leather benches, levering foreign bottled beer down necks and nodding just-so to bass-heavy beats, and arch three is for pogoing on one’s rare Japanese trainers. All around is reassuringly hard-edged exposed brick-work and street art from, among others, Banksy. Like the food and beer, the music menu is an international mash-up – DJs and live bands play anything from dancehall and grime to Kiwi or Eskimo sounds (often with themed food to match) – anything, in fact, as long as it is cutting-edge, played on an impeccable, all-enveloping sound system. In summer, there’s even an ‘urban’ barbecue in its fag garden. ‘Is it is it wicked’, as the homies say.
