Fabric
Good choice if you’re looking for nightclubs in London that are all about beat. It used to be all about meat, as the building was originally a meat cellar to service Smithfield’s meat market. With three dance-floors – including a full-on warehouse rave den with a ‘bodysonic’ floor that pumps bass through the soles of your feet, and a constantly upgraded surround sound system – Fabric is for anyone into a racing bpm. It is renowned for supporting new, underground DJs playing the latest breaks, drum’n’bass, house, techno and electro, and, to stay with the game, has introduced live music (electronic orchestras, rock bands, MCs, etc). But as a destination club, it lacks that vibe that only locals bring – this disparate 1,500-capacity crowd includes stag parties, bridge-and-tunnellers and tourists, happy to wait in Fabric’s massive queues (it even sells queue-jumping rights with monthly membership). There’s some convergence around the unisex loos, where surprised strangers often slip into conversation, and there’s some warmth in the chill-out areas. But Fabric – modern, cool and loud – is considered London’s best dance club and, for that, not intended as cosy and cute (nor indeed a meat market).
