Hg2 : The Hedonist

Maggie’s

Fed up of trying hard to keep up with tryhard clubs in London? Perhaps it’s time to embrace the decade that taste forgot. Named after the quintessential 1980s’ icon, Margaret Thatcher, this shamelessly silly club is a much-needed dose of humour on the stuffy Sloane scene. Opened in spring 2010 by old Etonian and royal chum Charlie Gilkes with Duncan Stirling (the duo behind Barts, see BARS), Maggie’s is an 1980s’ onslaught of garish glitz and glam – from the splashy mural depicting caricatures of the era, including Timmy Mallet, the A-Team’s Mr T and Mrs T herself, to Lycra-legginged, permed wig-wearing waitresses roller-skating between the giant Rubik’s cube tables. Pin~a coladas, Slush Puppies and Babychams are served by shaker-throwing flair barmen dressed as Tom Cruise from Cocktail. There’s no let-up even in the unisex loos, with Union Jack toilet seats, beano-lined cubicles and recordings of the Iron Lady’s greatest speeches (NB: the music jumps the decades from 1am). While they’ve tried to avoid it becoming an unofficial Young Conservatives club (turning down Tory requests to host events here), it’s inevitably blue, what with the founders’ associations. And for that, Maggie’s is rather elitist and expensive. So authentic.
