Hg2 : The Hedonist

La Suite II

Design maven Anouska Hempel’s trademark minimalism is instantly evident upon entering this one of many Marylebone townhouse hotels in London. A dramatic four-storey void spliced by a blade wall forms the spine of the central staircase and the 16 all-white, four-star suites have been artfully softened using beams of acid yellow light. Despite the flashy design flourishes, function and form are equally important in this boutique bolthole aimed at style-conscious business travellers. Guestrooms have been based upon Japanese homes and feature floating walls which slide and pivot to transform the space into work, rest or sleeping areas. Each suite also has a tiny yet super-stylish kitchen, a slick bathroom with backlit mirrors and a ‘media wall’ housing every conceivable piece of electronic kit a travelling entrepreneur might need, plus a built-in PlayStation console for precious downtime. There’s no hotel bar or restaurant (just the lobby which offers free cappuccinos and fruit, and a restaurant delivery service) – this is a sanctuary for silence. There’s even a lending library (also in the lobby), with a fashionable selection of art, design and photography tomes. It’s all very neat, high-tech and Zen-lite (so Hempel); romantics and pleasure-seekers should head elsewhere.
