Hg2 : The Hedonist

RSJ

Long running discreet South Bank destination by way of Waterloo, that opened in converted 19th-century stables (named after the rolled steel joints used to hold up its roof) back in 1980. The cooking is French on the whole, but takes in Mediterranean influences and likes to make use of name-checked seasonal British ingredients. An approach seen in dishes such as Italian pale aubergine, ricotta, oregano, penne pasta; roast Suffolk lamb, French beans, baby fennel and finger carrots; and Lemon curd tartlet with fresh summer berries. The wine list, a favourite of Heston Blumenthal, is a long love letter to the Loire Valley, with the 250 or so different bins from the region. “Being shallow I like to try lots of different wines in rapid succession,” notes food writer, Caroline Stacey, “Their entry level list of dozen wines by the glass lets me do that.”
