Hg2 : The Hedonist

Salon

Eating food foraged from around Brixton may sound a little alarming, but hold your nerve for a visit to Salon and you will be richly rewarded.

From a diminutive dining room in Brixton Market comes an array of inventive dishes using many ingredients from nearby parks – from hawthorn and nettles to artichokes and elderberries. Other London-sourced treats include ‘nduja from Borough, bread from Peckham, pancetta from Hackney, coffee ground in Finchley, and their homemade own chutneys, syrups and curds.

In suitable South London tradition, chef Nicholas Balfe ran the kitchens at Frank’s in Peckham and Brunswick House in Vauxhall before setting up shop in this former hairdressing salon. As the restaurant is only thirty covers you can just chat to him most evenings over the kitchen counter.

Salon offers a £29 set menu or a la carte tasting plates, and weekend brunches when you can try their three cheese cornbread, hazelnut ganache, warm banana bread, or pickled walnut with cow’s curd.
