Hg2 : The Hedonist

Shampers

This ’80s throwback (it actually opened in 1977) is the sort of wine bar that used to be a ubiquitous feature of London life. That it’s survived where many others have sunk without trace in a sea of mediocre Beaujolais Nouveau is a testament to Shampers staying power. A good location has helped, as has an unpretentious well-priced menu that does comfort via a mix of duck confit, steak sandwiches and steak and kidney pie. Naturally the well-priced wine list that tours the world but spends the most time in France, much like the menu, has played its part. As the name would suggest, there’s a particularly good selection of champagne, and pudding wines and ports. Run by the same proprietor since the mid ’80s, it’s popular with aging Soho advertising types and bufferish bores – but don’t let that put you off.
