St John Bread & Wine
Offshoot of St John opened in 2003 over by Spitalfields Market, built around a bakery and a wine shop, with a staggered menu that runs all day from breakfast to dinner, reflecting the British seasonal St John approach but more tailored to tapas-style sharing. A typical day might start with an Old Spot bacon sandwich, have an elevenses of some seed cake and a glass of Madeira – my dear, pop in at lunch for some smoked sprats and horseradish, followed by duck and lentils. Finish the day with a dinner of pigeon and hispi, with Eccles cake & Lancashire cheese for afters. The all-white interior has an open kitchen and bakery at the back and chairs that tend to numb the bum. The wine list, as at St John, is one for the Francophiles.
