House of Elemis
This most exotic of London spas – set in a courtyard off Bond Street – is so oversubscribed that it sometimes might seem easier to fly to one of the countries that have influenced its philosophy than it is to make an appointment here. However, once in Elemis’ incense-infused, silk-clad confines, surrounded by Buddha statuettes, you’ll see that the far-flung destination has been brought to you – as in the warm, ruby-red Balinese Suite, which has authentic, holistic therapies to match. The mosaic-ed Moroccan Rasul (or steam chamber) is fit for an Arabian king and is a popular treatment à deux around Valentine’s Day: the process starts with a medicinal chakra mud (which you coat yourself in from top to toe before reclining in a heated throne to allow the mud’s detoxifying properties to take hold), followed by a rinse-off under the warm rain shower that cascades down from the ceiling. Serious skincare is just as much the order of the day with facials for every skin complaint; all treatments use Elemis products. By the time the Tibetan chimes signal the end of your treatment you may well feel you have spent a week in a tropical idyll.
