Founded in 1946 by ambitious patty purveyor Tommy Koulax, this is the venerable home of the city’s most famous chili-topped burger, still operating at its original location at Beverly and Rampart. Amazingly, this jumping joint manages to serve 15,000 customers a week – and countless more when the place offers its food at the original prices, causing lines to flow up the block – and features numerous other locations throughout LA, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties. Made to order, an Original Tommy’s Burger goes like this, from the top down: bun, pickle, beefsteak tomato slice, freshly chopped onions, Tommy’s famous chili, the beef patty, a double-thick slice of cheese, and the bottom bun. Heavenly, every step of the way. Despite the bite that comes from this meaty chili, you’ll see patrons at its locations from morning until late at night, which says something about its undeniable popularity.
