Housed in a greenhouse on the second floor of The LINE Hotel in LA, it’s easy to see why Commissary has become one of the more Instagrammed restaurants of late. Exposed pipes above compete for space with green plants that elegantly drape down from the ceiling. Stools at the bar have just the right amount of scuff for style. And the space offers all the natural light you could hope for as it comes dappled through the windows of the glass structure.
Needless to say, Commissary is a great place to grab breakfast during the week or brunch at the weekends – if you can get a seat. The breakfast menu is international in scope, offering everything from congee (with poached egg, peanut, garlic, onion, and sesame) and choriquiles (with chorizo, eggs, cotija, cilantro crema and enchilada sauce) to fresh-baked pastries and smoked salmon bagels. At the weekend, brunch is served buffet-style and is something of a feast, with bottomless mimosas, unlimited made-to-order entrees (like eggs, pancakes and french toast), and – a particular highlight – a prime rib carving station. It’s a food event you won’t want to miss.
But if your visit to Commissary falls during the week, never fear. The lunch and dinner menus are a wonder, with dishes like po’boys, dumplings and curry competing for your attention. During the day though, it’s hard to beat the Rice Bowl Power Lunch, which you can customise by adding veg like charred carrot, yellow sauce, radish, cucumber, and sambal, not to mention even more substance with steak and salsa verde. To set you up for the rest of your day, it also includes a soft drink and some freshly-baked cookies. What could be better than that?
