You’ll be spellbound by the skill and speed of the barmen at Del Diego, a tiny, low-key and refreshingly unpretentious cocktail bar in Madrid. They look as though they’ve been mixing cocktails so long, they could do it in their sleep, and while they’re crushing ice and adding salt or sugar in a blur of activity, they’ll still be taking orders from whoever’s next to walk through the door.
All of the 50-plus cocktails on the menu at Del Diego are around €7.50, although the house special, Del Diego (vodka, kirsch, peach, lemon and soda water), is a little disappointing. You can opt for table service at one of the few tables, but it’s much more fun to stand at the bar – if there’s room. The décor is uninspiring, but it doesn’t matter – the cocktails take centre-stage here.
