A recent trend has seen some very cool bars in Madrid spring up in old-fashioned venues. Along with Demode, José Alfredo is one of the best of its kind, serving up a selection of 26 different cocktails along with the copas (insanely strong long drinks) so integral to a Spanish night out. José Alfredo itself tends to be quite busy, so head towards the back where you’ll find a cosy mirrored room, complete with sofas.
Stake it out for a little while and pounce as soon as a seat comes up. The action is presided over by some very cool, pierced and tattooed waiting staff who, while they may look a little intimidating, are actually very friendly and courteous. Keep your eyes peeled for the odd Almodóvar starlet, as the venue is popular with movers and shakers in the domestic film industry.
