Restaurateur Ignazio Deias is cornering the market in Madrid for Italian restaurants, being the man behind La Piazzetta, Per Bacco!, Ma Tutti, and now Acquafredda. Tucked away in a side street near Metro Nuñez de Balboa, Acquafredda encapsulates that most Madrileño of buzzwords: a ‘multiespacios’. All things to all men it’s a place to have lunch, an Italian deli, a pastry shop and a wine merchants, all under one roof. The staff are 100% Italian – as the dropping of aspirates attests – and are attentive and efficient. The décor leaves a bit to be desired, with gaudy red plastic adorning the deli area and the shop front, but the dining area itself is tastefully decked out with earthy flagstones and beige fittings. Well-heeled señoras and businessmen drop by to enjoy authentic Italian dishes off the lunch menu – but if it’s dinner you’re after, be sure to call and book in advance.
