Hg2 : The Hedonist

Europa Decó

Why the owners of the Hotel Urban named this restaurant ‘Europa Decó’ is difficult to imagine as almost everything about it is imported from outside of Europe. The stone walls are from Brazil, furnishings are from Zimbabwe and the totem poles are from Papua New Guinea not to mention Joaquin de Felipe’s exotic menu which reads like a Darwinian voyage listing Iranian Caviar, Tataki (New Zealand) Kobe, Kamone Tomatoes and Oysters from Beluga 000 (wherever that is!).

Fish are definitely the speciality and great attention has been paid to the way vegetables and garnishing are prepared with them. A confit of salted Cod with Lemongrass or Tuna Fillet with Anemones and Soya Buds can be ordered with a side serving of seasonal vegetables cooked in two stages in extra virgin olive oil.

Animal lovers beware that table mats and plush seats are upholstered with Vicuna skin resembling a smooth crocodile texture and the whole place exudes colonial bounty and excess, even the cheese trolley is carved out of solid ebony!
