Housed in the ultra-stylish surrounds of the ME Meliá, the Midnight Rose is the first restaurant venture from the Gerber brothers in Madrid, and it doesn’t disappoint. As you enter Midnight Rose, you may spot a nod to the hotel’s past as ‘the bullfighters’ hotel’, thanks to the mounted taurine heads flanking the bar.
The effort to conserve the original splendour of the building continues in the restaurant, although in a more subtle manner, thanks to interior designer Keith Hobbs (a man who counts George Clooney and Bono as clients), who has made good use of designer furniture to create a slightly retro feel.
The menu comes stacked with surprises, such as the Oreo-biscuit appetisers, actually made of black olives and parmesan. Chef Jaime Renedo mixes up everything from pasta and salmorejo (tomato-style soup from Córdoba), to stunning sushi, which is all served by friendly and highly professional waiters.
The place is very popular with the fashionista crowd, as well as visiting celebrities, who will all no doubt be hoping that the Gerbers open up another venue in the city sometime soon. Take a trip up the elevator to the terrace bar, The Penthouse, to end an evening of opulence.
