Marrakech hotels don’t come much cosier than Riad Merdoudi, which is owned and managed by Australian Edwina and her Moroccan husband. Edwina, together with her dog Mary-Lou, immediately makes you feel welcome and comfortable in her home. She cooks all meals for her guests at Riad Merdoudi – which is very unusual in Marrakech – and these use traditional Moroccan ingredients and techniques but have an Australian twist.
The riad is an eclectic mix of both Moroccan and worldwide furnishings that all somehow fuse together to create a homely atmosphere. Rooms are quite simple and all come with good-sized tadelakted bathrooms.
Edwina runs cookery day classes both at the riad and in the mountains and these include a trip to the spice market to shop for ingredients. The couple also run longer trips to both the Atlas mountains and the desert, where groups of up to four can visit their family’s village, as well as other places off the main tourist trail.
This is a well-located, laid-back riad that is a great base for longer stays in Marrakech.
