Ben Youssef Medersa
Ben Youssef Medersa is a Koranic school, specifically built for the teaching of Islamic law and scripture. This particular one was built in the 14th century and enlarged to its present size in 1564. It’s in remarkable shape, primarily because it was still in use up until the 1960s, and is one of the most stunning places to visit in Marrakech. A long corridor leads into a large, tranquil central space with a pool. At one end of the room is a prayer closet in which lecturers delivered their lessons, backs to their audience to make use of the dome’s natural acoustics. Around the central courtyard are scores of ascetic, cell-like rooms, which were used as student quarters.
