Originally one small, dark bar, Twist is now the biggest of all the gay clubs in Miami, boasting six separate spaces over two levels (each of which looks like it came out of a separate nightclub) plus a bungalow bar and muscled male dancers who perform seven nights a week. With a reduced number of venues to choose from, Twist has become the gay flag bearer on the Beach. It offers two-for-one drinks in the dark-lit entry bar from 1pm until 9pm – one of the most generous happy hour deals around. Twist plays a mixture of house, hip-hop and pop remixes, in the same style as most nightclubs and lounges on South Beach. The atmosphere is always very friendly, and the male clientele makes up a varied group of twinks, older gents and sluts-in-training. Also it is increasingly common for groups of party girls to end up at Twist, much to the dismay of the gentlemen with dollar bills they’re aching to part with. Once the tableau gets tired, the 11th Street Diner is next door for some after-Twist munchies.
