Alchimia

Alchimia’s warehouse lounge, filled with 20th-century antiques by Castiglioni, Artemide and B&B Italia, feels rather like drinking in Milan at a vintage furniture superstore.

Actually, the idea – of photographer/antiques dealer Angelo and his two grown-up children Cristian and Valentina – was to create a warm living-room ambience, but at 400m2 (in Angelo’s old photographic studio) and with a capacity of 700, that’s a lot of living.

It’s a mixed-up, shook-up world with three individual tastes ranging from 17th-century marble Tuscan statues to the 1930s art-deco wooden bar shipped over from Chicago – and it’s perfectly deliberate (and tasteful), hence the name Alchimia (alchemy).

Thoughtfully, there are coat stands everywhere to avoid the formality of cloakrooms, and a steak restaurant dominates a large corner, where Argentine and Italian beef cooked on volcanic rock is served. CDs like ‘The Best Chill Out Album Ever’ and ‘Mega Euro Lounge’ are less auspicious; live jazz on Thursdays is much more in keeping.
