Hg2 : The Hedonist

Launched during the Salone del Mobile in 2006, DesignLibrary pairs one streamlined, contemporary example of Milan’s cafés with – you guessed it – a library dedicated to architecture and design. Swing through the large glass doors at the back for the nominal annual fee of €25, and access to over 2,000 books and 5,000 magazines will be yours. Anna and Giulio Castelli, design gurus and founders of Kartell, gifted a large chunk of the collection. Emphasis is spread evenly over historical and modern texts, with original Triennale exhibition publications, Driade catalogues and Casabella magazines competing for shelf space. The room of sleek desktop Macs (and WiFi throughout – hard to find in Milan) make this a terminally cool spot to be seen checking your email. Thursday evenings at 9pm it’s members only, as renowned designers stop in to give small presentations, promoting their latest creations. If you’re not a design aficionado, know that everyone in this city is – the cafe is located on hip Via Savona, making for hours of contemporary style spotting.
