Hg2 : The Hedonist

Aldebaran

Directly opposite the entrance to the State Tretyakov Gallery and Museum, this Art Nouveau-style café serves traditional Russian and European café food, making it the perfect place to rest your museum-weary feet either for a restorative coffee or something a little more substantial.

The café is laid out over two floors – a display counter and a few tables downstairs, with a tall, brightly coloured stained-glass window spanning the two floors and a sweeping Art Nouveau marble staircase that leads up to green leather banquette seating booths in the gallery.

The atmosphere is light and airy and although the service is somewhat slow, one is forgiving because Aldebaran is always busy and usually full of foreigners who, like you, have been trekking round the Tretyakov.

In the summer, the café doubles in size, spilling out onto the pavement in front of a small green, making it a fun place to sit and while the afternoon away, people-watching and pondering on the art you have just absorbed.
