Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café Margarita

Right next to Patriarch’s Pond, the single room of this dark cosy café is set behind a colourfully muralled door (right on the corner of the street – you could almost miss it) depicting a scene from the classic novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita.
rn
rnThis veteran of attractions has been here for 17 years, popular with tourists and locals alike as a place to come and listen to classically trained musicians (both students and pros) playing Russian folk music.
rn
rnThe walls are covered with an eclectic assortment of books and fintifilushki (ornamental bits and bobs) on redwood shelves, matching the nature of the clientele here exactly. They sit around redwood tables and enjoy a good oldfashioned sing-song accompanied by some fairly basic Russian food – a small cover charge of 100 roubles is added to your bill for the music (no credit cards are accepted).
rn
rnBooking is advised as this tiny, somewhat chaotic jolly venue fills up rather quickly – it’s a pure unadulterated blast.
