That this restaurant is a favourite destination of the rich and powerful – including presidents Yeltsin and Putin – perhaps explains the lines of huge, expensive cars parked outside, and the machine-gun toting security guards at the entrance. Yet once inside the environment couldn’t be more peaceful. Surrounded by trees on the outskirts of Moscow, Tsar’s Hunt is fashioned as a pre-revolutionary hunting lodge, complete with water wheel and portraits of Russian royalty hanging between the animal pelts on the walls. The food takes its inspiration from traditional hunting fare – expect game, wildfowl, and fish. There’s also a huge appetiser bar, and an excellent selection of vodka. While prices aren’t quite as homely as the decor, this is inarguably a delightul country escape.
